Outcome bias in self-evaluations: Quasi-experimental field evidence from Swiss driving license exams

چکیده
Exploiting a quasi-experimental field setting, we examine whether people are outcome biased when self-evaluating their past decisions. Using data from Swiss driving license exams, find that candidates who narrowly passed the theoretical exam significantly less likely to pass subsequent practical – which is taken several months after than those failed. Those on first attempt receive more objections regarding momentary, on-the-spot decisions in exam, consistent with idea underlying behavioral difference worse preparation.

Addressing self-selection bias in quasi-experimental evaluations of whole-school reform. A comparison of methods.
This article discusses potential sources of self-selection bias in quasi-experimental evaluations of whole-school reform models and considers how individual student-level data might be used to provide valid impact estimates. Although repeated pretreatment and posttreatment measures of student performance can provide unbiased estimates under relatively weak assumptions, such data are difficult t...
متن کاملQuasi - Experimental Evaluations
OVERVIEW Although experimental studies are described as the “gold standard” for assessing the effectiveness of a program in changing outcomes, in some cases, quasi-experimental studies may be more feasible or appropriate. Many types of quasi-experimental studies are possible. For example, an implementation study can provide valuable information on whether, how, and for whom services are provide...
متن کاملInstrument-Induced Bias in Donation Mechanisms: Evidence from the Field
Eliciting actual donations toward a public good has been proposed as a means of estimating a lower bound to individuals’ compensating surplus, and can be accomplished using mail/phone surveys or field experiments. This study shows that when warm-glow is present, the elicitation instrument decreases the transaction costs of donating. This presents an obstacle to using the donation mechanism. As ...
متن کاملBias in Online Classes: Evidence from a Field Experiment
While online learning environments are increasingly common, relatively little is known about issues of equity in these settings. We test for the presence of race and gender biases among postsecondary students and instructors in online classes by measuring student and instructor responses to discussion comments we posted in the discussion forums of 124 different online courses. Each comment was ...
متن کاملNeighborhood disorder and individual economic self-sufficiency: New evidence from a quasi-experimental study.
This paper draws on data from the Monitoring Mt. Laurel Study, a new survey-based study that enables us to compare residents living in an affordable housing project in a middle-class New Jersey suburb to a comparable group of non-residents. Building on the theoretical and empirical contributions of the Gautreaux and Moving to Opportunity studies, we test the hypothesis that living in this housi...
